Product Summary
Varn Wood Products is a family-owned southern pine sawmill producing 90 million board feet of lumber per year, primarily for the framing trade. We started up in 1968 and currently employ 75 people.
The timber we buy and grow as well as our method of manufacture is third party certified as to sustainability. We conform to the requirements of the Georgia Environmental Protection Division and all the other regulatory agencies.
Our sawmill residues are made into wood pellets at our pellet plant.
Construction and Materials
Varn Wood Products specializes in lumber and engineered wood for framing applications. While the specific construction details and materials for individual products are not elaborated upon in the provided context, the company's focus on framing suggests a commitment to structural integrity and durability.
Typically, lumber and engineered wood products used for framing are manufactured to meet stringent industry standards for strength, stability, and performance. This ensures they can withstand the loads and stresses associated with building construction.
Key aspects of construction and materials for framing products commonly include:
- Wood Species: The selection of wood species is crucial. Common choices for framing lumber include Douglas Fir, Southern Yellow Pine, Hem-Fir, and Spruce-Pine-Fir, each selected for its specific strength-to-weight ratio and availability.
- Grading: Lumber is graded based on its physical characteristics, such as knots, grain patterns, and defects, which directly impact its strength. Higher grades are typically used for structural applications.
- Moisture Content: Kiln-dried lumber is standard for framing to reduce shrinkage, warping, and the risk of fungal decay.
- Engineered Wood Products: For engineered wood, materials like wood strands, veneers, or lumber pieces are bonded together with adhesives. Examples include laminated veneer lumber (LVL), oriented strand lumber (OSL), and glulam beams, which are engineered to offer superior strength and stability, often in applications where traditional lumber might not suffice.
- Adhesives and Binders: For engineered wood products, high-performance adhesives are used to create strong and durable bonds between wood components.
- Preservatives and Treatments: Depending on the application and intended use, wood products may be treated with preservatives to resist decay, insects, and fire.
Varn Wood Products, operating within the Lumber & Engineered Wood (Framing) category, would therefore be expected to utilize these foundational principles in their manufacturing processes to deliver reliable framing materials.

Each piece is carefully selected and graded to ensure it meets the structural requirements for wall studs, floor joists, roof rafters, and other critical framing components. The natural strength of wood, combined with our quality control, offers builders a dependable and cost-effective material for creating safe and sturdy frameworks.
- Feature: High-strength wood fibers. Benefit: Provides superior load-bearing capacity for safe and stable structures.
- Feature: Consistent grading and dimensions. Benefit: Ensures ease of use for builders, reducing waste and installation time, while guaranteeing predictable structural performance.
- Feature: Resistance to environmental factors. Benefit: Contributes to the longevity of the building, minimizing the need for future repairs.
Engineered Wood Products: For applications requiring enhanced performance or larger spans, Varn Wood Products offers a selection of engineered wood solutions. These products are manufactured by bonding together wood strands, veneers, or other forms to create superior structural members. Engineered wood offers advantages such as increased strength, uniformity, and stability compared to traditional lumber, making it ideal for demanding framing tasks.
- Feature: Uniform strength and consistent performance. Benefit: Eliminates natural defects found in solid lumber, providing predictable structural integrity for critical elements like beams and joists.
- Feature: Ability to create longer, stronger members. Benefit: Enables the design of open-concept spaces and the spanning of larger distances without intermediate supports, offering greater architectural flexibility.
- Feature: Reduced susceptibility to warping, shrinking, and swelling. Benefit: Leads to a more stable structure over time, reducing the likelihood of issues like drywall cracking or sticking doors.
