Product Summary
Warmboard combines a structural subfloor and a thermodynamically sophisticated radiant panel into one simple component of your radiant heating system. Warmboard begins with a stiff, strong sheet of tongue and groove, weather-resistant plywood. A modular pattern of channels is cut into the top surface. A thick sheet of aluminum is stamped to match the channel pattern and is permanently bonded to each panel.
Construction and Materials
Warmboard is a high-performance radiant subfloor system designed to deliver exceptional comfort and energy efficiency. Its innovative construction integrates seamlessly into traditional construction methods, replacing standard plywood or OSB subflooring with a superior alternative.
Construction Details
The core of Warmboard's effectiveness lies in its multi-layered construction. Each panel is engineered to provide a stable and thermally conductive surface for radiant heating systems.
- Structural Layer: The primary structural layer of Warmboard is a high-density, proprietary composite material. This material is exceptionally strong and stable, providing a solid foundation for flooring.
- Aluminum Heat Transfer Channels: Embedded within the composite structure are precisely formed aluminum channels. These channels are crucial for efficient heat distribution. PEX tubing for the radiant system is snapped directly into these channels, ensuring maximum surface contact and therefore optimal heat transfer to the finished floor.
- Surface Layer: The top surface of Warmboard is designed for direct adhesion of finished flooring, such as tile, hardwood, or engineered wood. This eliminates the need for additional underlayment in many cases, simplifying installation and reducing height build-up.
Materials Used
Warmboard utilizes a selection of durable and high-performance materials to achieve its unique capabilities.
- High-Density Composite: This proprietary blend of materials forms the structural integrity of the panel, offering superior strength, moisture resistance, and dimensional stability compared to traditional wood subflooring.
- Aluminum: High-grade aluminum is used for the heat transfer channels due to its excellent thermal conductivity, allowing for rapid and even distribution of heat from the PEX tubing.
The design of Warmboard panels allows for straightforward installation. The panels are typically 1-1/8" thick and can be cut and fitted on-site using standard woodworking tools. PEX tubing is then laid into the pre-formed aluminum channels, and the finished flooring is adhered directly to the Warmboard surface.
Energy Efficiency
Warmboard represents a highly efficient radiant heating system, designed to deliver superior comfort and significant energy savings. Its core innovation lies in the construction and material science of the radiant subfloor panels, which are engineered for optimal heat transfer and retention.
The energy efficiency of Warmboard stems from several key factors:
- Superior Heat Transfer: The high thermal conductivity of the Warmboard panels, combined with their integral aluminum heat diffusion channels, allows for exceptionally efficient transfer of heat from the hydronic tubing to the living space. This means less energy is required to achieve and maintain desired room temperatures compared to traditional heating methods.
- Low Water Temperature Operation: Warmboard systems are designed to operate effectively with significantly lower water temperatures than conventional radiators or baseboard heaters. This is particularly beneficial when paired with high-efficiency heat sources such as condensing boilers, heat pumps, or solar thermal systems, as these sources achieve their highest efficiency when operating at lower temperatures. Lower water temperatures translate directly to reduced energy consumption.
- Reduced Heat Loss: The insulated nature of the Warmboard panels minimizes heat loss downwards into the subfloor structure. The heat is directed upwards into the occupied space, where it is needed, rather than being wasted.
- Comfort and Temperature Control: Radiant heating provides a more even and consistent heat distribution throughout a room, eliminating cold spots often associated with forced-air systems. This enhanced comfort means that occupants may be able to set their thermostats a degree or two lower and still feel just as warm, leading to further energy savings. The responsive nature of radiant systems also allows for precise temperature control, preventing overheating and wasted energy.
- Integration with Renewable Energy: Warmboard's low-temperature operation makes it an ideal partner for renewable energy sources like solar thermal collectors or geothermal heat pumps. These systems are most efficient at lower operating temperatures, allowing for maximum energy capture and utilization when used in conjunction with Warmboard.
- Material Properties: The specific materials used in Warmboard construction are chosen for their thermal performance. This includes materials that facilitate rapid heat diffusion and minimize thermal resistance, ensuring that the heat generated by the hydronic tubing is delivered efficiently to the surface of the floor.
By optimizing the transfer and management of heat, Warmboard systems contribute to a more comfortable living environment while significantly reducing the energy required for heating.
Options-Styles
Warmboard offers a sophisticated radiant heating solution designed to integrate seamlessly into your home's construction. The core of the Warmboard system is its innovative panel design, which provides an exceptionally efficient and comfortable heat delivery method.
The primary style option revolves around the type of Warmboard panel used, catering to different construction needs and preferences:
- Warmboard-R: This is the flagship radiant panel. It is engineered with integrated aluminum heat-conducting fins and pre-grooved channels designed to perfectly accommodate PEX tubing. The R-value of the Warmboard-R panel is a critical feature, offering superior insulation compared to traditional subflooring. This insulation prevents heat loss downwards, directing the warmth upwards into the living space where it is needed most. The rigid structure of Warmboard-R also serves as a robust subfloor, simplifying the construction process by combining multiple layers into one component.
- Warmboard-S: This panel is specifically designed for slab-on-grade installations. Similar to the Warmboard-R, it incorporates aluminum fins and channels for PEX tubing. However, the Warmboard-S is engineered to be installed directly onto a concrete slab, providing an efficient way to bring radiant heat to homes built on grade. It also acts as a protective layer and a thermal break, enhancing the performance of the radiant system.
Beyond the core panel types, the overall "style" of a Warmboard installation is characterized by its:
- Invisible Integration: Once installed, Warmboard is completely hidden beneath the finished flooring. This means there are no visible radiators, vents, or other heating elements, allowing for complete freedom in interior design and decor.
- Even Heat Distribution: The large surface area of the Warmboard panels and the precise placement of PEX tubing ensure a uniform and consistent temperature throughout the room, eliminating cold spots and drafts often associated with forced-air systems.
- Superior Comfort: Radiant heat is known for its gentle, pervasive warmth that heats objects and people directly, creating a more comfortable and natural living environment.
- Energy Efficiency: By directing heat where it's needed and minimizing heat loss, Warmboard systems contribute to significant energy savings compared to conventional heating methods.
The selection of Warmboard panels is primarily driven by the construction method of the home (e.g., traditional joist framing or slab-on-grade), with both options delivering the inherent benefits of advanced radiant heating technology.
